Rosmarinic acid and phenolic compounds from Sage (Salvia officinalis) are essentially anti-sweating and antipyretic (hot flashes and sweating) and are also emmenagogues during the menopause. Phenolic compounds are gastric stimulants that also contribute to the prevention of other effects linked to menopause, such as fluid retention, heavy legs and irritability.

Valeric acid and especially the sesquiterpene acids from Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) significantly limit excessive emotionality and nervous irritability due to their high affinity for GABA receptors. They have sedative activity without inducing drowsiness. They are indicated for the symptomatic treatment of neurotic states. They have recognized anxiolytic activity in states of neurovegetative dystonia, neurotic states or precordial constrictions. They help with better mental recovery and promote restful sleep.

The saponins, other glycosides (heterosides) and triterpenes of Blackthorn Berries (Cimifuga racemosa) act as phytoestrogens, improving mood and sleep quality. These substances contribute to reducing excessive sweating and hot flashes, effects attributable to the regulation of the pituitary hormone response to estrogen deficiency, through a normalizing effect of the luteinizing hormone. They intervene in bone healing in cases of osteoporosis by preventing osteoclastogenesis. They are anti-inflammatory, since they stimulate the secretion of IL-8, knowing that the effects of cytokines are based on mRNA modifications, with the exception of IL-8. Isoferulic acid inhibits IL-6, alpha-TNF and gamma-IFN, inducing a healing action in rheumatic diseases and other inflammatory pathologies. They have a psycholeptic action by activating serotonin receptors and its derivative NΩ-methylserotonin. It is an alternative recognized by the European Pharmacopoeia to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for the signs and symptoms associated with menopause and premenopause, premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea.

Vitex agnus-castus casticin and agnuside intervene in the optimization of hormonal balance weighted by feedback, attributable to an important activity at the level of the pituitary gland. The European Commission recognizes the use of Agnus-castus in the treatment of menstrual cycle irregularities, premenstrual syndrome, mastalgia, mastitis and sclerocystic mastitis. They have a dopaminergic effect, because they bind to D1 receptors, stimulating anilate cyclase and inducing an increase in the rate of cAMP. These compounds reduce the effects of menopause. Dopamine has a micromolar affinity for D1 receptors.
